Soul Breakout 61 compiles 56 tracks displaying the development of soul music in the US charts of 1961. All of the songs were R&B and/or pop hits and many have become classics of the genre.
The artists include legends like James Brown, Brook Benton, Sam Cooke, Gladys Knight, Etta James and the Miracles. The collection, which includes full details of the original label issues, The informative booklet notes are authored by respected Echoes/Record Collector journalist Mike Atherton.
1961 found soul pioneers Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Bobby Bland and James Brown continuing to enjoy R&B smashes and pop hits. The year saw Motown consolidating its presence in the charts with hits for the Miracles and Mary Wells and the chart debut of the Marvelettes. Proto-Stax label Satellite was responsible for first hits by Carla Thomas and the Mar-Keys. Phil Spector s new label Philles got off to a fine start with the Crystals first hit. Other newcomers to the listings that became stars of the genre include Gladys Knight, the Spinners and Chuck Jackson.
