Twelve classics by The Oldians in Catalan for the first time!
Catalonia’s foremost octet in the fusion of traditional Jamaican rhythms and jazz cadences presents a collection of 12 classics from their vast repertoire in Catalan for the very first time, featuring Memi Sillah as guest vocalist
On the verge of celebrating 25 years of career and boasting a prolific discography that includes eight studio albums, a handful of highly coveted 7” singles on Discogs and even a “greatest hits” released in Japan, The Oldians travel the world only to return home with their first-ever album in Catalan, entitled ‘Som uns soulful fucking lovers’
The Oldians —this super Catalan combo bringing together the crème de la crème of the 2000s Spanish ska & reggae scene— will release their ninth full-length album Som uns soulful fucking lovers in autumn 2025, with a 12” vinyl edition by Madrid-based ska, rocksteady and reggae specialist label Liquidator Music, featuring stunning artwork by Txarly Brown. It has taken almost 25 years for the band, led by restless guitarist from Ripollet (BCN) Javier García Murcia aka Sir J The Oldian, to deliver an album in Catalan. From an original idea by Osona-born saxophonist Ricard Vinyets, part of the combo since their 2008 debut Old Secrets, Sir J The Oldian set the wheels in motion earlier this year: selecting 12 classics from the band’s extensive repertoire, adapting the lyrics, recording overdubs, producing new mixes, and handing them over for Catalan singer Memi Sillah to perform and breathe new life into.
Som uns soulful fucking lovers is packed with The Oldians’ trademark rocksteady and reggae —hence the suggestive album title (no, you won’t find any ska here, no matter how slow)—, and the tracklist showcases the very best of the mid-tempos the band has recorded in their eight studio albums so far. The new record shines brightly in its own right, and in this exercise of revisiting and adapting their own classics into Catalan, The Oldians manage to capture the best of both a compilation and a brand-new creation. On the instrumental side, Sir J The Oldian has updated some of the group’s most legendary gems with new arrangements and sections, plus fresh mixes, which will delight fans around the world by revealing a whole new musical life in each track. Alongside the band’s usual exceptional line-up, notable guest contributions include Jamaican master percussionist Larry MacDonald, Tommy Tornado and David Carrasco on saxophone, Ramon Fossatti and Alejo Peloche on trombone, Joan Vergès on percussion and Àlex Climent on piano.
The Oldians’ classic songs also take a new form with the lead vocals of Memi Sillah, who in this project steps into the role previously held by the two singers who have so far voiced the band’s tracks in English, Leire Etxarri and Saphie Wells. Ah, Memi —how she crowns the band’s jamaican instrumental groove, and what an ice on the top is to hear her sing of love, heartbreak, and the everyday battles of The Oldians in Catalan for the first time! Som uns soulful fucking lovers is a gift to The Oldians’ legion of global fans, and finally, the best possible introduction of this Catalan octet to anyone in the country who has yet to discover them.
